I'm trying to use a SN74LVC126ADRG4 tri-state buffer to put a 100Khz @5v signal into HIZ mode at certain times. This signal is the SCL clock pin for I2C communications with a TOF10120 laser sensor. I successfully drive this clock directly with a pic microcontroller which has a maximum of 25ma source current. The buffer's data sheet says it can source +-50ma, its Vcc can be 5V and its VOH = VCC.

The tri-state buffer will correctly output this waveform with no load but as soon a I connect the output pin to the sensor's SCL pin the waveform just goes to a steady 5V.

Any suggestions?

So what do you think and what have you tried?

Your post seems to be very much some sort of homework or test question.

No way to truly know from this end.

More information and details needed. E.g. "certain times".

Schematics, test results,etc...

Are you able to reverse engineer the problem?

This an original development project. "Certain times" just means some time. I have chased this by reading the data sheets for all the devices involved, double checked the wiring, and scoped out all signals. The I2C communication works and I get reasonable readings from the laser sensor when not using the buffer.

Thanks for the replies,
The laser sensor requires TTL input levels and the 74LS devices are cmos but the 74LVC devices can have a 5V Vcc and according to the data sheet VOH = VCC.
